The evolution of solar pool covers followed a straight line from their origin as a bubble wrap product used in packaging industry high volume, low quality material.  Aside from added UV inhibitors and material thickness tweaks, that fruit did not fall far from the family tree within the migration into the swimming pool industry. To this day, both products still typically appear remarkably the same yet their functions are completely different despite the shorter life to be expected in outdoor usage.

Traditional bubbles have not evolved from key inherent weaknesses in their design including thin points and high residual stress after their manufacture. Thin points in a bubble profile are weak points that are quickly broken down by UV and chemical attack. Bubbles within a cover are the highest stress areas as they are under constant strain. Any design presenting a bubble with thin areas is a flawed design that guarantees a shorter service life.  This is typically witnessed by the ubiquitous little disc bubble remnants that start dislodging from the underside of the cover from accelerated degradation. 

The real design departure came when GeoBubble™ was engineered as a fresh re-invention of the bubble focused on optimized adaptations to provide maximum longevity within swimming pool specific environments. This was achieved by reducing internal stresses and maintaining uniform thickness over whole bubble profiles.

How Was GeoBubble™ Developed? 

Over five years of collaboration with the London Metropolitan University and the University of Brighton led to the evolution of this product’s unique bubble design.              

Synergy between industrial and academic knowledge has enabled the evolution of the best swimming pool cover material available.              

Along with the bubble design significant research has also gone in to the selection of the best additives, stabilizers and anti oxidant package, aimed to provide the best performing and longest lasting swimming pool bubble cover material available.


Bubble design alone will not stop premature failure of a swimming pool solar cover. Ultra Violet (UV) rays are emitted by the sun is destructive not only to the human skin but also to many man made materials including polyethylene and other plastic products. Unless such materials are specially formulated with additives, they become faded and brittle after exposure to UV light and chemicals. In cooperation with suppliers and university partners over the last 12 years, Plastipack has developed the best additive, stabilizer and anti-oxidant package available. This package dramatically increases the lifespan of the swimming pool solar cover material by helping to make it more resistant to both UV light and chemical attack. In combination with the unique bubble design, the longevity of the product is radically increased.


The GeoBubble™design has a much larger footprint than most traditional bubble materials to allow for expansion of air in the bubble shape and thereby reduce stress. The shape of the waistline section adds stiffness and makes the bubble strong enough to hold expanding air and will not stretch and burst under pressure. The large footprint also acts as an insulator to retain heat in the pool and it helps the cover stick to the water so it is less likely to be blown off the pool.  


Curiously in Europe it is widely agreed throughout the industry that for a good cover that will last two to three years, the thickness should be a minimum of 15-16 mils whereas here in the US, covers of 12 mils thickness are often warranted for that period.  In actuality, longer life spans require that covers be manufactured thicker offering enhanced UV and oxidizing chemical resistance by virtue of greater thickness.

Our Guard series of solar covers are manufactured 20 mils thick to provide up to 6 years of performance.  Almost no other solar covers are offered in North America at that thickness where 16 mils tends to be the maximum “top shelf” thickness product.  We have seen thin competitor products advertised with very aggressive life spans including a 13 mil thickness product with a purported lifespan of 7 years.  Our in-house evaluation using accelerating weathering equipment to emulate UV radiation aging suggest that one such product is far from being capable of this marketed lifespan.
